I must be settled into the new house, since I finally managed a reasonable amount of uni work again. Despite taking a long nap at mid-day I still managed to put in six hours of uni work today, and have added 1401 words to my thesis. If I can just manage this (or better) for a few weeks, the thesis will be done...

Still no working network, making it necessary to bring my computer to the (painfully slow) internet connection at the far end of the house. This could be a (partial) blessing in that I'm not being tempted to take breaks from uni work to check to see if anything important has come in. However, if something important does come it, it could be nearly 24 hours before I see it, since I'm only getting on line once a day. To say nothing of the work I'm not doing because it would require being on line. (fortunately, there is so much that needs doing, I can choose from the not-on-line portion of the to-do list)

When one relocates to the southern hemisphere it becomes necessary to adjust one's perceptions of the seasons and how they relate to the calendar. My SCA name includes the phrase "Talvi Tytär" (Finnish for "winter daughter" because I've always loved the winter--my favourite time of they year has always been that time from Thanksgiving to New Years when life is a whirlwind of snow, parties, good friends, good food, good times. The snow part has always been a favourite, and I rather miss it. However, waking up to a breakfast involving fresh raspberries from the garden does go a long way to reconcile myself to the fact that it is summer in December!

Thanks to much effort on the part of [livejournal.com profile] clovis_t we now have internet access in our room! It is slow and unreliable, but it is present! Yay! No more having to carry the computer down the hall, and then restart it there--which means no more having to re-set up my spare monitor! No more having to wait till the others have gone to bed at night to get my internet fix.

So now I can catch up on important greetings:

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] fjorlief, may your next year be full of successful art projects, time spent with friends and loved ones, and much joy.

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] callistotoni may your next year see continued growth of your new love, may you find ways to be together often, and may your joy continue to inspire the rest of us.

and a belated happy birthday to my most wondrous mother, [livejournal.com profile] darttn, I did send you an e-mail on the day, but you are such a great mom, it is worth repeating again here in front of everyone. Hope your day was full of fun, and your next year full of adventures of the good sort!

We were up much too late last night, so slept in this morning. I was still sleepy, so spent a fair bit of time over breakfast reading the e-mail I'd downloaded before bed last night. By the time I'd finished that and done some cleaning in the kitchen [livejournal.com profile] clovis_t announced that he'd finally got the router to work, so that I can access the internet from the comfort of my recliner in my own room, without moving the computer. Needless to say, I had to celebrate this feat by checking for new mail and LJ posts. Once I'd caught up on that and was ready to start uni work, we had a power failure! My computer may be a laptop, but this really just means that I've got time to safely shut it down when we lose electricity, it doesn't really let me *work* on battery power (nor has any laptop computer I've ever used, personally, I think the possibility of computer batteries lasting more than 30 minutes is just a myth). So I spent some time playing with my hammer dulcimer and then went for a walk with [livejournal.com profile] clovis_t, and the power was restored to normal around the time we arrived home. But by then it was already after 5pm (days have this way of slipping past so quickly!), so I settled into uni work. Since then I've managed three full hours of work (and a couple of interruptions) which has lengthened the thesis by 243 words and 13 figures, and brought chapter five *much* closer to done. I so want to give this chapter to my advisor for comments before Christmas...
