When one relocates to the southern hemisphere it becomes necessary to adjust one's perceptions of the seasons and how they relate to the calendar. My SCA name includes the phrase "Talvi Tytär" (Finnish for "winter daughter" because I've always loved the winter--my favourite time of they year has always been that time from Thanksgiving to New Years when life is a whirlwind of snow, parties, good friends, good food, good times. The snow part has always been a favourite, and I rather miss it. However, waking up to a breakfast involving fresh raspberries from the garden does go a long way to reconcile myself to the fact that it is summer in December!

Thanks to much effort on the part of [livejournal.com profile] clovis_t we now have internet access in our room! It is slow and unreliable, but it is present! Yay! No more having to carry the computer down the hall, and then restart it there--which means no more having to re-set up my spare monitor! No more having to wait till the others have gone to bed at night to get my internet fix.

So now I can catch up on important greetings:

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] fjorlief, may your next year be full of successful art projects, time spent with friends and loved ones, and much joy.

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] callistotoni may your next year see continued growth of your new love, may you find ways to be together often, and may your joy continue to inspire the rest of us.

and a belated happy birthday to my most wondrous mother, [livejournal.com profile] darttn, I did send you an e-mail on the day, but you are such a great mom, it is worth repeating again here in front of everyone. Hope your day was full of fun, and your next year full of adventures of the good sort!

Hooray for better computer access! (I'm definitely finding that having the internet here in the living room makes life much less isolated than the several years I spent without) and thank you for your kind birthday wishes...

I'm glad to see you have connectivity again.

I'm thinking I'd like to try cross continental living. Maybe summer here and then summer there? It sounds like fun to me.

sounds far better than winter in both places... actually I'd prefer perpetual early autumn, the warm days and crisp cool but not cold nights, with occasional fog and rain to keep things form getting too dry. But the tuurible cold we have here right now, that can go, anytime...

I'm with you, but I want some spring too. Let's just skip the hottest part of summer and the coldest/wettest part of winter.

Now how could we arrange our travel schedule?

Some people move to Hawaii, or live on a yacht, but I don't really want to miss my California Sprint (which starts about February first, and that beautiful harvest time is not to be missed either.

Lordie, I wish I was rich! U;d have a home in New England for the leaf turning, and maybe I'd spend a week there for a taste of snow, and then I'd need a little place somewhere somewhere on a beach for a couple months stay, and then .....

Ah well. It was a thought.

b-day greeting

Thank you kiddo. Yes, I got your e-mail birthday greetings, but it was nice to receive a second one. I really can relate to your having to adjust to summer in December. I am not sure I ever really did adjust, but I did become reconciled to no snow in December when I was living there. We have so much snow here right now, it feels more like Alaska, than it does Seattle!
Love you
Mom
