As I sat here at the computer this evening I gradually noticed a popping sound, so I got up and looked. It turns out that they were shooting off fireworks on the Easter Shore (of the Derwent River that runs through Hobart, Tasmania) this evening. However, the dorm room I am using this week is high enough up the hill on this side of the river that I was looking down on the fireworks. Instead of seeing them against a backdrop of clear night sky, I looked at them against the backdrop of a hill covered with the lights of houses and street lights. A rather odd perspective I haven't seen before.
