Yesterday morning I walked up the hill to the museum and arrived before housekeeping had opened the longhouse. So I left my bag in the woodshed and went for a walk. I learned that if one continues on up the past where the Borg III longhouse was excavated, and take the next left onto the grass rutted road between the fields it brings one back down to the main road about 500 meters before the house I am staying, so I stopped back in the house to drink some water before heading back up the hill. It was a nice 30 minute loop.

By the time I got back the cleaning crew was working, so I asked when they normally open the longhouse. She said usually around 09:00, but they start at the visitor center/museum at 06:00, so I can just knock on the door to get them to let me in early.

I worked the full seven hours we were open yesterday, carving stone for most of it, though, of course, I often stopped to talk with people, and met many interesting visitors, and some delightful colleagues.

I brought with me a bentwood box in which I had packed cashews for the road, and had eaten just enough before arrival that my pizza bread pockets I had gotten out the freezer for the trip fit nicely in the box above the nuts. The space also works well for a salad wrap, as the lid holds the torilla shut while it is in there. Therefore I have been using this box as my primary lunch box, as I can just leave it in sight of the visitors, and grab out one wrap or one pocket, or a handful of nuts when I want a little something.

I also have one of those wooden bucket with lid boxes, in which I had packed hais (dried fruit and nut balls), and which has just room left on top to tuck a handfull of the yummy plums I bougt on arrival, so these I can access easily when working, without it messing with the illusion that I am a viking era craftsperson.

Since it is a long day I also bring a little extra in a plastic box hidden in my wool bag, and, so far I have needed to get into a little, but not all of that, too. But this also means that once I leave the longhouse at 17:00 I don't need to eat again that day.

I am running low on the pockets I brought with me, so this morning I thawed some frozen mixed veg snd some frozen spinach, drained the water and mixed it with the water from a box of chickpeas (the chickpeas themselves were mixed with the veg, along with herbs and spices). I then mixed the liquid with the last of my Turkish yoghurt, some baking powder, and enough flour to make a soft dough. Then I patted the dough out to little rounds, and folded it over a bit of veg and chickpeas to make little pockets. I brushed these with melted butter (the extra yummy Norwegian butter made from clotted cream) and baked a dozen of them. I ate one directly from the oven, yum! And the rest should keep me fed the next two or three days.

I am really impressed with how fast I am progressing on carving this cooking pot. I have taken the inside from totally flat to roughly as deep as the one I have been working on at home in 2.5 days. Perhaps there is a chance to finish it before I leave on Sunday.

I put a photo of the view out the kitchen window on FB this morning:

Sooner or later I should upload other photos...

It is so beautiful where you live and where you travel to! I hope we shall also get a view of the stone pot you are carving...
