hopefully it works
Jul. 17th, 2024 08:24 am When I sent my current boss my notice that I had a new job lined up for September, I didn't know what the Swedish standard length of notice was, and I asked how much longer I need to work with them. She replied that I would need to work through to the end of August, as she would be going on vacation and thus not able to advertise the position before the start of August. I didn't like the idea, but neither did I argue the point.
This month Keldor is on vacation, as the company he works for shuts down completely in July, not even leaving a skeleton crew. This means that he is sleeping in every day, which means that I am resenting that 05:20 alarm (normally he's already snoozed his alarm twice by then, and is ready to actually get up). I also have been sad that working five days a week means that there are no possibilities for a longer road trip, and stressed that there will be no time off between the cleaning job ending and the new job starting.
But the straw that really broke the camel's back was getting a message from the person who is covering for our boss while she is on holiday, saying that the health center called to complain that I haven't worked this week. I replied with the list of hours I have worked this week, which was consistently more minutes each day than I am actually paid for. She replied with the news that I had forgotten to take out the trash. I replied pointing out that I had taken at least five full bags each day to the trash room, and which one do they think was missed? She said she didn't know, but just keep doing my best.
The fact that (at least one person) at the health center doesn't appreciate my work makes me resent working there in ways that didn't happen before that message exchange. Normally I just happily listened to my audio book and worked my way across the building, doing what needs to be done, and paying no attention to if I was using more or less time than the company thinks it should take (and it is usually more). Now I feel like there is no point in doing the work, they won't appreciate it anyway (but I am still doing it).
However, I did send an email to my boss yesterday pointing out that I have learned that in Sweden it is a one-month notice period that is standard, and thus, since I sent my resignation letter on 20 June, I could be done as early as 20 July. However, since I didn't know, and that is only a few days from now, I suggested that my last day should be 6 August, which would be three weeks from now, and fully 17 days longer than the minimum notice period. That email got an automatic reply saying that she is back in the office on 29 July, and giving the phone number of the person to contact while she's gone. So I copied the text of the email and send it also as a text message to the other person.
Then I took all work off of my calendar for after the 6th, and I fully intend to head to Lofoten for the Viking festival starting 8 August. Ideally with Keldor, but he can't check with his boss till the first week of August, so if I have to go without him, I will.
