At leadt one of you will recognise the FB conversation this was posted in. Those conversations, are hard to find again, so I am reposting here...
When our shire first started discussing if we would go barony one of our members suggested a dice game to choose amoung the candidates for the baronial couple--a game where people start with an equal number of dice, but could earn extra by having served as an officer, or running events, or bringing in new members, has performed at a fest, or other measurable contributions to the society. Once everyone has their hanful of dice they do a round robin tournament, best two of three, high roll wins, as many semi final rounds as needed in case of ties to reduce the field to a victorious pair. Partially luck, partially a contribution of skills/good deeds, still a show for the audience, and, if one on the pair is the dice roller, and the other the consort, still done for the inspiration (but the deeds of both influences how many dice the pair get.

Alas, we have never tested this yet, as we are no nearer to deciding if we will go barony, but as a thought experiment for how SCA royals, at any level, are chosen, I rather like it.
