My first craft project of the year was making a rainbow heart button, which I did on 1 January, and actually posted photos that day. Some of my friends asked for instructions, so I am finally getting them posted, with photos even. There are lots of photos, so let's put it behind a cut
To make a rainbow heart button
1. Obtain some nice thick scrap wool that doesn’t fray, in six rainbow colours you enjoy that go well together. They can be very small scraps.
2. Cut small strips, one of each colour approximately 35 mm long, and 5 mm wide.
3. Carefully sew through the side edges of the fabric to attach the strips to one another so that the stitches don’t show from the front, changing thread colours as needed till you have a striped rectangle of wool that measures about 30 x 35 mm. The secret is small stitches and being careful that the needle never goes all the way through the fabric to the front.

4. Cut a heart from a solid colour wool that is not more than 30 cm tall and 35 mm wide
5. Carefully sew the heart to the back side of the rainbow rectangle, using small stitches that never show on the front side of the rainbow. Use lots of them to keep the little strips well anchored to the base heart—this is a button, which will get lots of wear as you use it.

6. Carefully trim away all of the rainbow bits outside of the heart.

7. Cut another solid colour wool heart the same size as the first (the one backing the rainbow heart), and several more, each a bit smaller than the one before. Also cut a small oval in that wool.
8. Stack the small hearts together and sew them to one another so they don’t slide around as you work.

9. Make a heart sandwich: rainbow heart on top, pretty side up, other large heart on bottom, little ones stacked between

10. Take a wool embroidery yarn and sew with osenstitch around the edges of the heart, from center top to bottom point, and then again the other way from center top to bottom point.

11. Take a sturdy wool yarn (I used knitting yarn) and sew the button to its hood or other item of clothing of your choice.
12. Cut a button hole and use wool yarn to do a button hole stitch around the edge of the opening. Optional: add a contrasting colour of wool yarn against the cut edge and sewn down with the button hole stitch (for strength as well as beauty), and another contrasting colour to whip stitch around the outer edge of the button hole.
