Carola picked me up at
frualeydis's just after 10:00 and we were on the road by 10:29.
We arrived at 11:25 at Stop #1: Valda (57.448341, 11.914264) is a Stone Age archaeological site on the Swedish coast not far south of Göteborg. There is an information sign over a large stone which was carved with lots of small round cup like holes. That stone was soapstone, of course, but there was no way I was going to take my rock hammer to it (even if the sign hadn't forbidden damaging it). So we hunted the pile of loose stones till we found one that was also soapstone, and then we set on our way again at 12:26 (after dipping our feet in the ocean, since we were there).
We arrived at 13:32 at Stop #2: Täljstensgatan (57.865005, 11.900126). This one also has an information sign, describing the stone age quarry and pointing out the rock carving of a boat and another little round cup shape. We wandered around the hill and found an unobtrusive spot to take a tiny sample and got back on the road at 14:16.
At 15:25 we arrived at Stop 3: Tegen (58.515507, 12.047154). This was an outcrop in the forest not far from the road. However, there was a closed gate over the road, so we had to walk about 7 minutes to get from the car to the outcrop (and we walked part of it twice as I did the road part in sandals, looked at the forest, returned to the car, put on my boots, and went back, and then down the hill to the spot on the stream where the outcrop should be. It was exactly where I expected it and we easily took a sample and were back on the road at 16:15.
At 16:35 we arrived at Stop #4: Rådane (58.541515, 12.091632). This one was on a hill above some farm houses, so we first tried knocking on the door to ask for advice on the best way to get from the roadto the old quarry site. But no one was home at any of the three houses in that part of the village, so we just left the car near one of the houses and set off into the forest above their house.
We went over a couple of rocky ridges and eventually got to where the quarry should be. However, while we tried lots of different rocks, none of them seemed soft enough to be soapstone. We wandered around the area for quite a while, and were quite certain we knew exactly where on the map and LIDAR image we were, and we were on the correct spot, yet still tje rocks seemed too hard. However, it wad getting late, so I took two samples, and I labeled them "probably not täljsten". Then we returned to the car at 18:39 and got back on the road at 18:50.
The plan had been to drive to Stop 5 and camp there, but it was getting too dark, so we went only as far as the town of Håbol, where we set up the tent on the edge of the sports field (with the permission of a local guy).
