back to work

Winter break is over much too soon. Granted, most of my colleagues took this week off, too, but I chose to only take the mellandagarna ("middle days"--the ones between Christmas and New Years) off. Since I need to spend the last two weeks of January in Durham I will be working full time this week to make up the hours in advance. So far, so good--I was in the lab by 07:00 this morning and didn't head home till 15:00. That was enough time to do two quick laser experiments and process the data afterwards, so I guess I can use the laser again tomorrow, too.
This evening I met David at the big-box store part of town--he went there straight from work, since he worked today in PiteƄ, about 45 minutes south of here, and those stores are just off the highway on his way home. But the company car isn't big enough for the washing machine they have bought for the apartment, so I brought Styx, which, since I took the two back seats out, had plenty of room. Since we were at the store we also had a quick sticky-beak in the dish washer isle. The dishwasher that came with the house has died of old age (David checked it this weekend, the heating element has quit working, and it isn't worth fixing.) I would be perfectly happy to replace the dishwasher with a couple of large drawers for keeping stuff in, since I never use the dishwasher anyway (it is faster to wash them by hands, and if I have been cooking or eating I need to wash my hands, anyway, so why not wash the dishes while I am at it?) but he really likes to have a dishwasher, so it made sense to look and touch what is available in that store before looking on line and comparing features and prices. (While in the store I stopped to drool over a lovely five-burner, three oven induction stove that I would love to have (and so wouldn't fit in the kitchen as it is), but not at that price--if I had that much cash on hand I would throw it at the mortgage.)
When we got back to the house we put the washing machine on the wheeled dolly thing to get it up the stairs. David suggested that I stand on the upstairs end and pull on the handel and he could stand below and push it up each step. On the very first step he pushed faster and further than I expected, causing me to unbalance and sit down on the steps much harder than I would have liked (could feel the bruise as I was driving home, since it was the same side as the gas pedal that I landed on), but after that one oops, we managed getting it the rest of the way up the stairs without any problems.
Tonight I should go to bed early, as I ought to work eight more hours, but I want to get home on time to cook dinner for my cousin Carola and her family, who are visiting some friends in Boden for the holidays, and are going to spend the day doing tourist stuff in LuleƄ. Sadly, David will miss their visit, as he has to go to Sundsvall for work tomorrow. The other guys in the company who could do the job that needs doing there aren't available, so he will take the 06:00 flight south in the morning, and the 21:00 flight home, so he won't be home till nearly midnight. The joys of being a service tech--it isn't possible to predict when these sorts of distance jobs will come up--they didn't know till today that he was going to have to do this (and, frankly, I suspect that the company will be losing money, since they will have to pay for his plane ticket, though that is probably better than him doing the six hour drive each way).
