I just had an adventure

On the train trip down to Göteborg a couple of days ago we had two bunks in one of the six bunk shared rooms, which have doors which can be locked from the inside, but no keys, so the people in the room need to let the others in when needed. Therefore we just didn't lock the door, and everyone could come and go at will.
Tonight, for the trip back to Luleå, we three have one of the more expensive three bunk rooms. Right after we boarded C mentioned that there is a shower that we can use (that isn't available for people in the six bunk rooms), and pointed to the shower key, which is a plastic chip with a drawing of a shower head on it, and mentioned its existence. However, I failed to notice the plastic things next to the shower key, and she didn't mention that they are room keys.
Being a bit tired from a fun afternoon spent with cousins I curled up in my bunk (the top one, of course) with a book pretty much as soon as I finished doing my yoga. After some time I needed to pee, and put down my book, and was surprised to see that neither David nor Caroline were in the room (since I had taken out my hearing aids it isn't surprising that I hadn't heard them leave). Slightly confused I left the room, to discover the loo was occupied. I waited for a while, but no one came out, so I decided to go back into the room and wait. Only to discover that the door was locked and I wasn't wearing my hearing aids, and didn't have my phone with me. Oops!
So I walked to one end of the train to see if I could find David and Caroline. On the way I checked every loo between our room and the dining car, all were occupied, so I still couldn't pee, and they weren't that direction. By then I guessed that they may have gone to the shower, so I went the other direction, and tried knocking on the shower door and asking if David was in there, but, of course, without my hearing aids I couldn't hear if there was a reply. So I told the door that I was locked out of the room, but still no reply I could hear.
But the loo next to the shower was open, so I went in and accomplished that mission. When I came out David and Caroline were standing in the hall, and they rescued me by letting me back into the room.

bunk beds ?!
Date: 2016-01-05 05:23 am (UTC)Alas our trains, unless one books a roomette with another person at the time of purchasing the ticket, one is charged the full price for a two person roomette. (the only other option is sitting for the whole trip) Nonetheless, it is so much nicer to be able to sleep on a long trip. I traveled from my home in Portland to Boston and back two years ago to visit my family, and will do so again this autumn. Wish I could do it more often but it takes over three days each way, and costs the earth.

Date: 2016-01-05 08:17 am (UTC)The cost for the train between here and southern Sweden is, more or less, the same as the cost of flying, unless one stumbles on a really good flight deal (or has to buy the flight at the last minute and pay really high fares). The "typical" price is around 1000 SEK, which isn't much different from 100€. So for us, when we are doing that trip it depends on what the needs are for the trip which we choose--is time of the essence (it is less than 1.5 hours to fly to Göteberg, if one gets a direct flight), and we don't need to bring much ? Or do we have time to spare (more than 18 hours to train to Göteberg), and want to bring as much as we can carry/drag on board?
