We arrived in Göteborg around 11:00. C met us at the train station and we took the tram to her apartment, on the north edge of the city, together, where we had lunch, lounged about a bit. Did some sewing, then had a light, early dinner before changing clothes and taking the tram to L &J's place for the "Tropical New Years Eve" party. For the occasion [profile] lord_kjar wore shorts, a short sleeved white linen shirt, sunglasses, a lei, and flowers braided into his hair. I had a flower print long skirt, tank top, lei, and flower barettes in my hair, and C had a wrap around skirt, sea-shell covered bra, lei, and flowers in her hair.

The tram crossed the river as the fireworks were going off over the opra house (which is on the river bank) giving us a nice view. However, the fireworks ended just as the tram got close to where we needed to change. Oh, my goodness are there a LOT of people in Göteborg! The crowd was so dense the tram had to stop and wait--it looked like films of a buffalo herd, though not as hairy. I am so grateful that I don't live in a big city, it is just not pleasant to see so many people at once.

Eventually the tram made it to our stop, and we managed to make our way to the next tram and out to the suberb where L & J live. There were a total of ten of us there, half of whom I had never met before.

One of the guests comes from New Zealand, and has also been in Sweden for five years, yet he gave me the impression that my ability to follow Swedish conversation is better than his.

Thet had lots of vegetarian food and tropical fruity blender drinks. They had a big screen showing a "relaxing ocen beach and waves, complete with requesite palm tree.

Much of the evening passed in plesant conversation (in both languages) and eating, while I made progress sewing my tunic. Then we played Cards Againt Humanity for a short time, stopping after two rounds, at which point I had three cards, so was declared the winner. Then it was 20 minutes till midnight, so we paused and replaced the beach with a count down clock.

After midnight they opened another card game which is nearly exactly the same as Cards Against Humanity, but is in Swedish instead. Many of the cards are directly translated (we saw both versions, one in each game), but the politicans and cultural references are replaced with Swedish versions. I enjoyed that one more because I also learned some new words.

The other guests left before 03:00, but we three stayed and chatted with our hosts a fair bit longer. Around quarter to 04:00 I noticed that while I still wasn't hungry due to my normal "no interest in food at night", my blood sugar was getting low. Knowing that we would still have to take the tram I decided it would be smart to take a nap and see if I woke ready for breakfast.

It did--20 minutes later I woke up and ate some sliced fruit, a philo wrapped spinach-potato-feta thing, and some cheesecake. Sometime thereafter we headed home. I was quite surprised just how many people were waiting to chang trams in the city center at 04:30. Why do so many of them smoke? Yet one more reason to avoid cities!

I was on bed by 06:00, and slept till nearly noon. Today we baked some oven pancakes to take with us on the train tomorrow, have measured C's furniture so it can be added to the CorelDraw file for the house and we can figure out what will go where. We are also loading a few big suitcases with her SCA and folk dance costumes, fabric, and other stuff she won't need before moving in with us in February.

Tomorrow morning [livejournal.com profile] lord_kjar and I will go into town, buy me some ankle length wool socks from a store C mentioned, and then take the train to another town, where my grandfather's cousin Kaija will pick us up and take us to lunch at her daughter's place.

Then we will head back to Göteborg, meet up with C again and we three will train back home, arriving mid day on Sunday. She will stay through his birthday (on the 9th), then return to Göteborg for a few more weeks of work and packing before she moves north. Unless she gets a good job offer elsewhere, in which case plans will be adjusted...
