Or is that I didn't *really* have a progress report, so I didn't post one? (If so, then shame on me, because it is the threat of posting "didn't accomplish anything" which helps motivate me to accomplish lots!)

Anyway, Friday was a day with some time devoted to getting ready for house guests, some to walks, and some to uni work, with somewhat fewer hours to uni work than there should have been. One of the houseguests, who was meant to arrive late afternoon/early evening wound up having car trouble, so opted to just stay with family instead of coming here. That was kind of disappointing, as I'd been looking forward to spending some time with her in addition to at the event, but these things happen. The others went to the pre-event gathering at the Solar, and had so much fun they didn't arrive here to sleep till after I went to sleep (which was around 01:00 Saturday morning). I'm certain that I'd have enjoyed attending that gathering, but I stayed home and got a bit more work done than if I'd have gone out.

Saturday I managed a bit more than three hours of uni work during the day (and a short walk with one of the house guests) and then went to the SCA feast sponsored by the College of St. Gildas. It was a truly delightful evening. The small hall was just about exactly the correct size for those of us in attendance--not a huge crowd, but a friendly one, with some singing, some dancing, some socializing, court (with the installation of the newest Seneschal, an energetic lord whom I expect shall do well with the job), and plenty of time for stitching (I am *so* glad that I've worked out that I can do nalbinding by candlelight--if I hadn't, I'd have had to go without a project, since none of my current sewing projects can really be done in poor lighting conditions, and I get so little time to stitch, I'm simply not interested in *not* stitching when I could be!). Really, everything I would want in an event! I also went to the after-revel, which means that I spent more than five hours at the event, which is a couple more than I did uni work. Oops, I suspect the ratio of time should really have been reversed, but I can't regret the fun time I had.

Today was a very slow starting sort of day--I managed to get up at 08:30, despite having not made it to bed before 02:00, because [livejournal.com profile] baronsnorri had suggested that we take the houseguest on a morning walk before they went off to today's rapier tourney--we hadn't enough time yesterday to take her all the way to the waterfall, and really, if you are going to stay here, you *should* get to see the waterfall. So off we went, sleepy though I was. Some combination of being short of sleep, or perhaps simply having had so much play-time the day before kept me not functioning my best for much of the day--several attempts to work, interspersed by long breaks (including one short nap). Finally I went for a walk with [livejournal.com profile] clovis_t and that woke me up enough to be really useful. The evening slipped by quickly as I worked out a template for calculating the area of six different zones of a garnet--inner core, middle core, outer core, inner rim, middle rim, and outer rim--complete with scale-model in garish colours in CorelDraw. Now that I've got it, I've made some good progress adding the extra fields to my spreadsheet for calculating the composition of the rock based upon the percentage of each mineral present and the measured composition of each mineral (or zone within a mineral). Alas, it is after midnight, and tomorrow we need to get up early, so I've put it down for now. In the morning I finish setting up the spreadsheet and use the results to try to calculate the pressure and temperature of this sample from the calculated whole-rock composition, to see how it compares with that calculated from the measured XRF-whole rock composition. I've done these for a few other samples, but so far only for those for which I couldn't obtain a pressure/temperature estimate for the XRF version (and still couldn't get one with the calculated version, even though it was noticeably different). It will be interesting to see what happens for this one. Will the different starting composition yield more or less the same pressure/temperature, a different pressure/temperature, or no estimate at all?

AH, would that I had the thousands it would cost to travel to visit you...I'd love to see the waterfall, and the other places of beauty in your lovely land.. I'll have to be content for now with your descriptions, and occasional glimpses in the journals of your LJ compatriots.

Isn't it wonderful that we *can* share such things from so far away, with so little effort?

Though, if you ever do want to come down, time if for something like Rowany Festival, and sell pretty stuff, you might make back the cost of the trip!

Well, a girl can dream, your beautiful land is one I have wanted to visit for many years...but that would have to be one very profitable sales event...I rarely merchant any more, since the last few events I sold almost nothing...everyone is spending their money on gasoline for transport, and the speedily spiraling cost of basic necessities like food and utilities.

I *suspect* that you'd have a bit better luck merchanting in another country where you were doing a one-time-only visit to folk who haven't yet seen your work. In part because they'd know this was their one chance, and in part because you haven't already sold to many of the folks who'd want your work. Unfortunately, the only way to find out is to test this theory.

I don't know if the services are still there, but one time I came over here I first checked web pages for a variety of airlines to see what the cost would be to get here, then went to a web page wherein I could name my own price and made an offer. The first one, which was *much* lower than normal fairs was not accepted, but my second try, which was somewhere in between normal fares and the really low fare was accepted. The downside is that I couldn't give any input as to what time of day or which airlines--just told it I was willing to travel any time during a three day period. If you manage to save up some money towards travel and have a flexible time schedule, such a web page is a good way to go--you won't pay more than the amount you set (but try an even cheaper amount first!).
