Yesterday I finished up the last details needed for my report--burning things to the DVD, and emailed my colleague at the mine who still lives in Luleå part time (weekends) to see if he wanted to pick it up sometime in the next week or so. One of the other colleagues replied saying that the (semi) local one is traveling for work and won't be here for at least a month, and can I please post it to them?

Now I hadn't planned to come back into the office for the rest of this month--I have long since worked more hours than needed to cover my 25% time for this six month contract. However, mailing that off sounded like an easy task, and a good excuse for a bike ride, so I came in first thing this morning.

When I arrived my boss happened to be in his office (he travels enough for work that this is always surprising), and he asked me about plans for publication. He also and pointed out that I should hold on to the samples until the data is published and also said that there is no problem with my keeping the office this summer, even though I won't be employed, so there is a place to keep the samples.

The conversation inspired me to look at the submission requirements for a couple of journals in this sub field of geology, and since I liked one's polices better than the other, I decided to try submitting to them. Then I saved a copy of the report and started making "just a couple of modifications". The next thing I knew I had completely revised the entire document, cutting huge amounts of information which will be useful to the folk at the mine, who are actually going to use the data, but aren't really relevant to readers of a journal article. This resulted in dropping a few figures and tables, so then I went through and re-numbered all of those, and now, here it is at 14:00 in the afternoon, and I have already emailed my colleagues at the mine the draft of the new, improved, document asking for feedback and checking to confirm if all three want to be listed as co-authors for the publication.

oops, I had planned to take a few days off. However, now I am really free to enjoy however many days off I get before one or more of them replies.

This weekend is the big Spelmanstämman (gathering of folk musicians and dancers) and we have house guests coming tonight for it, so I will really not be doing any work tomorrow, but perhaps next week, if my colleagues haven't had time to send back comments, I can go back to that long neglected paper from my Italian research.
