we will "just" paint it

Posting the record of this project here, to remind me that the word "just" in that sentence actually implies a whole lot of work.
Sat 26-Jan-13 12:47 Purchase spark (400 SEK)from tip shop. Old paint was yellow and peeling; decide "we will "just" paint it blue.

12:51 Spend 269 SEK on blue paint, paint brushes, and paint thinner
17:30 David starts taking spark apart in prep for painting whilst I wash dinner dishes.
18:00 I start sanding off the old yellow paint from the spark pieces.
18:30 Took break from sanding to rescue the bread from the oven and have tea with the boys from choir, who had been over to practice with David.
19:30 Both David and I returned to sanding
21:00 David takes a break from sanding to go get his second dinner; I finish up the sanding without him.
22:00 "Finished sanding and started first coat of paint.
Tried to use paint mixed with paint thinner, but it was still too thick, so rinsed the brush in some fresh paint thinner (old yoghurt tubs are useful!) and used the resultant watery blue liquid instead.
In hindsight should have done some sort of primer coat in white or something else not yellow, since thin blue on yellow wood makes it a sickly greenish colour."
Sun 27-Jan-13 01:30 "Finished third coat of paint. Both the second and third coats used the mix of paint and paint thinner that I didn't use for the first coat--still lots of green stripes showing where yellow of the wood interacts with blue of the paint.
Whilst waiting for coats one (not long at all~20 min) and coat two (40 min?) to dry I kept busy with useful tasks around the house and chatting with David."
03:30 Finished fourth coat of paint, using mix of paint and thinner. Still has greenish stripes in my blue from that damn underlying yellow wood.
06:00 Finished fifth coat of paint, this time using full strength from the can. Still has greenish stripes in my blue from that damn underlying yellow wood. Decided to get a shower and go to bed, but planned to wake by 10:00 to do next coat, by which time it should be dry enough to add more.
12:26 Finished sixth coat of paint, using full strength from the can. Still has faint rare greenish stripes in my blue from that damn underlying yellow wood. Took first photos of project in progress.

Mon 28-Jan-13 22:00 finished assembling spark

I had hoped to have it ready to ride to uni on Monday, but that didn't happen. It is ready to ride in on Tuesday, but I don't know if the route is usable yet--sparks go best on well packed snow or ice, and today was our first fresh snowfall of the year. So, it all depends--are there any snow machine drivers out enjoying the bright moon tonight and packing down the snow on the lake between here an uni?
