How Delightfully Silly!

kareinaI have been reading a number of journal articles in pdf format recently (as graduate students often do). Today, when using the "view" menu in AdobeReader, I noticed that in addition to zooming in or out on the document, one can also choose "read out loud". So I tried it. The result is a soothing male computer-voice which is able to correctly pronounce common words, but stumbles terribly over such geological terms as "allochthonous". Its steady, unvaried reading speed and monotone doesn't lend itself very well to being something I'd care to listen to for any length of time. Yet, for all that, I found myself laughing and enjoying the fact that the program *is* able to read out loud at all!
