How I wish I could have been there
Jul. 17th, 2011 08:55 amThis weekend is the Coronet Tournament for the Principality of Nordmark, Kingdom of Drachenwald, hosted by my own home shire of Frostheim (LuleƄ, Sweden). When I first learned that we were hosting this event so soon after I moved there I was delighted. When I found out that my visitor visa to stay in Sweden was approved till only the 30th of June and therefore I would be gone just over two weeks before Coronet I was disappointed. I had hoped that a miracle would happen and my permanent resident visa would be granted on time for me to get home for the event, but it didn't happen, and I am still in Lochac waiting for the chance to go home.
Thanks to the wonders of the internet I was able to listen to the final rounds of Coronet tournament early yesterday morning (Australia time--that was late at night Sweden time--they did the tournament at night because they could--the sun was still well up!). I may not have been able to enter the lists (which I would have done had I been there), but at least I heard the news when two of my favorite people from Frostheim won the tourney, and I got too listen to the cheers of the crowd as it happened. It isn't the same as being there, but it brought me joy to hear it.
Just now, as I worked on the finishing touches for the talk I will do at UTAS tomorrow on my research and adventures while in Italy, I got a message from
archinonlive letting me know that he is now recognized as a Lord within the SCA. Oh, how I wish I could have been at the court where that award was presented! I am delighted that their Highness (I guess outgoing, since I was told on Friday that Investiture would be on Sunday morning, and it is still Saturday evening there, though it is Sunday morning here) found him worthy of this honour, and I would never have wanted them to withhold the award because I couldn't be there, but still, how I wish I were there.
