I woke up this morning at 04:45, did my sit-ups and other abs exercises, packed up the last minute things (like the pillow that had been in my checked luggage, and so isn't waiting for me at Hong Kong lost and found), and was out the door by 05:30. Check in of luggage went smoothly, but when I got to security they informed me that I had failed to take my sewing scissors out of my carry on. Oops! Raced back to bag check, went to the head of the line, turned in my scissors and the rest of my sewing kit (in my tiny toiletry bag, which was what I had in my backpack in the way of a container for them), and hurried back through security again.

Made it to the gate while they were still boarding, but didn't have time to re-fill my water before boarding, so was forced to purchase one of their tiny bottles of water on board (for $3.50!). Although as it turned out we were a little late taking off because some other passenger failed to board, so they had to remove that person's luggage. The flight was uneventful and short enough that I survived with only the small bottle of water, and both my suitcase and tiny checked bag of sewing stuff arrived safely.

I was met by a friend of the family and we set out for a day's adventures. We started the day in Richmond, where we wandered from one tourist shop to the next, fondling the fine Tasmanian wood working and admiring the occasional other item. It mostly rained when we were in the shops and was sunny while we wandered along the river and took photos of the bridge (oldest in Tasmania) and church and cemetery. (I don't have a camera with me, but she did.) A nice little blackwood box which surrounds a seal-able glass bottle followed me home--the plan is to use it to store the lotion I put on the psoriasis patch on my knee. The really lovely, huge blackwood bowl did not follow me home (though she took a photo of me drooling over it) due to reasons of budget and space available in luggage when I head home. A decent pair of sturdy leather shoes followed her home.

From there we drove through Hobart, along the coast through Taroona and past the shot tower, through Margate and down the Channel Highway till we came to Woodbridge, where we set off up hill in search of a hand-weaving studio I had once been to. What prompted that journey was my description of the tunnel through the trees to get to the Swiss-style house. We managed to find the place, and the tunnel in the trees was as cool as I remembered, but the studio was closed, so we didn't go in. However, it was snowing (really, really lightly), and that was a nice bonus.

From there we went to Grandvewe Cheeses, since she had never been and it was so nearby (she picked up some of their blue cheese). Then we continued on south around the channel highway then up through Huonville and to my new home, in New Town.

I will be living here with [livejournal.com profile] mushroom_maiden while her usual housemate is off in Iceland for a few months. It seems like a nice house, but it is COLD! here. I am tempted to invest in a thermometer, just to find out how cold it is in here. There is a woodstove in the living room, which I could use if I want, but I have set my computer up in my room, so that when I do my early morning video calls to [livejournal.com profile] archinonlive I don't disturb her. I do have a nice, warm, hot water bottle on my lap, but that doesn't help my arms/hands, which, despite the fingerless wool gloves, two wool sweaters & a shawl, are still cold enough to cause lots of typoes. In fact, it is time to go wash them in hot water, again, to get some blood into them. I wonder if I can get some office space at Uni to finish writing those papers someplace with heat?

In the morning I go in to Uni to meet with my erstwhile adviser and see what needs to happen for the one I should have finished promptly after completing my PhD. He didn't like the last draft I sent him, months ago, but an in person conversation should help sort out exactly why and what I need to do about it.

Since you mention it quite a lot I'm curious about your morning sports routine. What do you do exactly? ( mostly asking because I need to do some sort of straight forward get my ass in gear thingy I'm looking for ideas and inspiration)

and I'm with you on the hating being cold part.

hmm, what do I do, do I have words for them all--it would be easier to show than to try to describe, let me see...

* Some situps, of the sort where one's knees are bent, feet near bottom, shoulders rolling only part way up off of the bed (10 to 50, depending on inspiration of the moment--I won't bother to repeat the number of reps for the below, it is always around that for each thing, with, perhaps, 20 or 30 being the most typical range for any given thing)
* move right foot to left knee and roll torso up towards right knee with a bit of a twist/sit up movement
*repeat both sets of above, but opposite leg next time

depending on mood either repeat all of that and then go on to next set, or just go to:

* leg lifts of the sort where ankles are crossed, knees slightly bent, feet in the air above my torso, the movements lift my bottom very slightly off of the bed and back down again
* twists bringing opposite elbows to knees whilst feet are still in air, and hands are interlaced behind my head

Depending on the mood repeat any or all of the above or just go on to:

*leg lifts of the sort where the legs are stretched out along the mattress and then lifted only a few inches off of the bed, knees straight.
* leg lifts of the sort where the legs alternate between being straight out along the mattress and having knees bent and pulled towards my face
* leg lifts like the ones in the set above, but this time lifting much higher, so that all of my hips and even part of my lower back are pulled up into the air following the legs as they reach for the roof.
* more twists like above where I bring elbows to alternating knees as legs remain up in the air
* crunches where I bring knees to elbows without a twist
* bicycle type leg movements

Sometimes I intersperse repeats of any of the above before going on to things that are not done lying on my back:

* On hands and knees lift one leg to extend it straight behind me, and a little up
* same position, but lift leg to the side (keeping knees bent)

Laying on side, weight on the down side elbow, and the down side foot:

* Lift body up and down, keeping only elbow and ankle on the bed (do both sides, of course)

laying on tummy:

* Lace hands together behind my lower back and lift upper body off of mattress, arms heading a bit into the air, too
* move arms to crossed just above my head and repeat the upper body lifts

Laying on my side (do both sides, of course):

* lift upper leg straight up
* bend knee of upper leg and draw it towards chin
* lift upper leg into the air and kick towards the roof at about a 45 degree angle behind me

All of that takes somewhere between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on how many of each I do, and how tired I am. The sleepier I am the more likely it is to take longer, as I forget what I have done and just keep moving. Eventually the blood flow to the brain gets me to a point where I am actually paying attention to what I am doing, and I start putting more effort into it (and repeat things a bit to be certain I did them)

After that sometimes I also do push ups and wall pushups after I get out of bed, but this requires that A) I don't forget B) it is warm enough, and C) I still can spare the time.

On mornings like today they get modified to do as much as possible without removing the blankets from above me, which is hard to do--must go invest in a heater...

I love the cold, but I want it OUTSIDE! I want to be active in cold places, not work on my computer in one...
