I went in an spoke with my advisor today. As always, this was a good thing; not only was he able to give me some suggestions about the samples with which I've been working, he also eased my stress levels about that "funding running out deadline" which is looming. The one where I asked for a six-month extension, which would have been till November, and they said "yes, but only till 12 September; if you've met all of your milestones you said you'd meet by then, you may ask for the rest of the extension". One of those "milestones" I'd put in the application was my hope to have a complete draft by 1 September. However, the uni rules say that one needs to apply for extensions at least four weeks before one's funding runs out, which is this Friday, which is still a couple of weeks before 1 September.

So my advisor suggested that I spend one day printing out everything I've got so far, figures and all (though black and white would be fine for this), and include the entire packet with the application--that what they want to know is that I *am* going to finish, and they aren't throwing good money after bad by supporting a student with no intent to finish. So if I give them 100+ pages of text and a huge pile of figures showing that the first draft is more than half way done, I've got a reasonable chance of having them say "yes". And if for some reason they do not, we can always move back in with [livejournal.com profile] clovis_t's parents while we finish our degrees...

Today's actual thesis progress is only 246 words written and three figures, but oh, the content level of those figures! I learned things I didn't know about this sample, and I've only been playing with it off an on since 2005...

I decided to go ahead with the "90 minutes of fame" contest, which will happen at the UTAS staff club on Friday at 5pm. They encourage us to bring a "fan club" to "cheer us on", so if any of you can make it, it would be great to see you there. Besides, where else can you learn:
