another very fun night!
Mar. 15th, 2009 12:58 amThank you
madryn_1960 for going out of the way to come get me and loaning me the cash for admission! It was a blast of an evening, and better for your company.
If any of you ever get the chance to hear Crowfoot, take it! Their playing for the contra dance last night was amazing, but their concert tonight was so good I actually sat down to listen for parts of it instead of dancing non-stop! It turns out that in addition to playing beautiful music flawlessly, they can also sing, and write quite a number of their own tunes and songs. They did a version of the Cruel Sister that I've never heard before, and like very much, but the ballad that Adam wrote inspired by a ruined castle he once stumbled upon in England was even better. I see on their calendar that whilst they are based in Quebec they do make it to the Bay Area now and again, and I understand that they will be spending some time on the mainland before they head on the rest of their journey, so a number of my friends may get a chance to hear them. For any of you who are local and have missed them you still have one more chance--they are doing a music workshop at Wesley Hall on Melville St. tomorrow afternoon, followed by a dance workshop around 4pm, followed by a pot-luck farewell party starting around 6pm. If I can get a ride into town, I hope to do the dance workshop/party.
I made good progress today on uni work--doing the task I'd set myself. I now have an ArcMap file showing the locations of 20 biotites and 12 feldspars (and a couple of other minerals) in the thin section I'll be analysing with the microprobe next Wednesday. I've aligned all of the photos with the points at the correct scale, and superimposed the large photo to match up with the tiny ones. This will make it easy to select which grains I wish to analyse in hopes of getting the best results with the temperature-pressure calculations. (This sample gave results which were rather surprising, so we are going to do new data collection to check to see if it gives the same answer next time.)
Tomorrow I shall return to the edits/figure gathering of chapter three. Now it is time for yoga and sleep...
