three things revisited
Jun. 30th, 2008 07:49 pmWhen first I encountered the three-things meme it was a lethargic sort of day, and it took much thought to come up with anything that seemed unusual enough that my friends might not have done it too. It strikes me as odd the way our brains work--when feeling blah, our memories of life lack lustre and sparkle, but when feeling happy and bouncy our memories are full of adventures and good times shared with friends. Am I unusual? How many of my friends spent a summer camping in the Brooks Range mapping folds and faults? How many of my friends were bilingual when they learned to talk, but lost one language in a move? I can think of one who also drove from Oertha to Ansterora for XX Year, but it was me who got the "warning" for doing 90 in a 55 zone that trip. Such a nice officer to accept the "I didn't realized how fast I was going, I'm used to twisty-turvy mountain roads" as the literal truth it was.
I'm not the only one in my family to get married for the visa, but I don't know many other people who decided on a Tuesday to get married, and did the ceremony the very next Saturday and were still able to recite their vows *from memory* and *in unison* , or who cooked their own wedding feast. As far as that goes--how many of my friends need to look up their anniversary if someone asks when they got married? ("The Saturday after Thanksgiving" is easy to memorize, but doesn't come conveniently attached to a number!) I've picked up and moved to a new state, or a new country, on the spur of the moment more than once, but in that I'm following in my mother's footsteps. I'm ready to do it again, and frustrated that first I need to finish my degree. Or do I? Perhaps I could do it long distance? Hmmm. Nah, much easier to get feedback from an advisor one sees in person...
