hours slipping by faster than I expect
Sep. 28th, 2008 11:17 pmDespite staying up late last night doing uni work after the dance, I still woke up reasonable early, inspired to do uni work, and managed a couple of hours before deciding that it was nap time. After waking up I managed to vacuum and sweep, catch up on reading SCA-West (I love the way it slows down on the weekends!) and still did a number of hours of additional uni work (5.41 total). I don't really have any new words to report though-- part of that time was working on a geologic map, and one of the things my advisor suggested that I do was a comparison between the two different techniques I used to estimate temperature and pressure. The one technique takes the composition (as measured with the microprobe) of three different minerals which are in equilibrium in the sample, enters them into a spreadsheet which is set up to do the calculations. The other takes the composition of the entire rock, and calculates what minerals are expected to be present at any given temperature and pressure. From that one can find the mineral assemblage (and composition thereof) which best matches the minerals present and read the T/P from that. Therefore today I took the compositions of the *predicted* minerals from technique two and entered them into the spreadsheet for technique one. They do not match perfectly, though there is some vague agreement. However, I'm now much too tired to think about what the results mean, so I'll put off writing them up till morning...
