that total looks higher than it really is
Sep. 3rd, 2008 10:06 pmToday's goal was to spend the morning finishing up gathering all the thesis figures mentioned in the text so far and transfer them to the departmental shared hard drive for my advisor to download onto his computer at his leisure, so that he'd be able to look at them whilst editing the thesis. Then in the afternoon I was going to resume work on the thesis itself, largely reading over what I've got so far, cleaning it up, and making certain that all of the places wherein I'm still planning to do more stuff is clearly highlighted as "in progress, needs ___". I also needed to stop by the Uni to fill in "hire paperwork" for the "demonstrating" I did on Monday. The lady who has the paperwork works from 8-4pm daily.
I didn't manage to achieve goal one in the "morning", but I did manage to reach that breaking point at 15:40. There being only twenty minutes remaining till that payroll person was meant to go home, I called her, and she said she'd be willing to wait for me. I managed to get there only a minute or two after she was meant to be done for the day, and she was very sweet about it all. Since I was in the building for the first time in a while, I decided to use that slide scanner they've got to scan the slides from my field work in the Brooks Range for my Master's Thesis (back in 1995) and spent a bit of time taking them all out of their plastic holders and using the cute little puffer brush to clean off old dirt. Then we loaded a batch at a time into the automatic slide scanner and it started work on them. The lady in charge of the "printer room" (which, obviously, has ever so much more than printers) told me that I needn't stick around and watch it scan, she'd continue to transfer stacks as needed tonight till she went home (which would be soon), and then in the morning till they were done, and I could come back for them in the late morning.
That task (unplanned for the day, but one I've been wanting to do for a while) done, I then transferred 490 MB to the department's shared drive. I was actually surprised that I was able to do that--I vividly recall being unable to transfer some photos from the one of the microprobe lab computers to that shared drive because of having reached the permitted limit in terms of number of MB. But perhaps that limit has changed or something. Since I was playing with files I also devoted some time to backing up my files onto my personal drive on the departmental computer. Alas, I'm nearing my 24 GB limit of space there, so I have to be careful--I can't just copy over entire folders, I have to only copy over those files which are new or modified since the last time I did this. Makes the process quite tedious and time-consuming. And I really, really, hope that I never actually need to make use of those backups! By the time that finished and I went home, it was already 19:00, and there was a really pretty crescent moon out (and well on its way to setting behind the mountain). So I talked
clovis_t into a walk while it was still early enough to see/enjoy it, and *then* I finally settled into my "afternoon's" uni work.
I intended to simply read/edit what has already been written, to make certain that it says what I thought I was typing before giving it to my advisor--I want him to be able to edit the science, not the grammar--I can do that part myself, most days. However, I found a section largely unwritten, and couldn't resist starting to work on it, since it looked reasonably easy to do. I also inserted a number of highlighted "notes to self" to show where further information will be added later. As a result, the thesis is now 7,382 words longer than it was yesterday! But I think that the "notes to self" part don't *really* count (but, scattered as they are, I can't really not count them, and I don't wish to use Word's "comment" feature, because that changes the margins, and I like where the margins are set now, thank you.
