stopping at a breaking point
Aug. 27th, 2008 09:52 pmDespite getting what should have been *plenty* of sleep last night, I woke up tired and kind of slow moving. By the time I looked up from breakfast it was nearly noon, and
baronsnorri had suggested a morning walk today as he was working this evening. There being not much "morning" left, off we went. It was a lovely spring morning for a walk! We went up the hill above Strickland Falls, pausing to admire the cascade. While these are not terribly steep falls by the standard of this mountain, they are very pretty. From there we wandered along the fire trail till it looped back to the road and wandered back up the hill home--took nearly an hour and a half total. Last year that would have been a short walk for us, but this year, with my focus so much more on uni work, it counts as an unusually long walk. As much as I'm enjoying the process of being a PhD student finishing up, some days I miss being a PhD student in the early phase of the project, when it seems like there is all the time in the world to go for long walks!
During the late afternoon and early evening a couple of students from the College of St. Gildas came over to make use of my kitchen, since the don't have one at the Residential Hall. I had considered showing them where things are and then doing uni work, but the temptation to join them for play time turned out to be irresistible. We baked some cookies, some muffins, some Medieval style gingerbread, and made some pine-nut toffee. The plan is to sell it at the Uni tomorrow during the lunch break, in costume, to raise funds for the feast the College is holding next month, and, if lucky, recruit a few new students.
Once they left I finally settled in to my uni work, quickly wrote up one of the sections for chapter three that I hadn't yet started, and realized that the chapter is getting close to done. I think I've now put in a summary of all of the data of I've got thus far. There is still a bit more I can do, but without doing more calculations the chapter is, I think, complete. I'm a bit tired just now though, so I'll wait till morning and then look to see if it is really done save for the holes in the work, and if it is, I'll send it off to my advisor, with highlighted notes saying "to be calculated" (or whatever) as appropriate, to see if he's happy with what I've done so far. It is funny though, I did only 401 new words and three figures today, but because of where they fall, suddenly I feel ever so much closer to done! There are several advantages to writing sections of the chapter out of sequence--not only do you get to work on the part you feel like working on at the moment, but you also don't really realize just how little more needs doing until you do it, and then get to be pleasantly surprised.
