Having backed myself into a corner yesterday, knowing that there had to be an easier way to approach what I was trying to do, but not being able to see it, this morning I went in to Uni with [livejournal.com profile] clovis_t when he went in for his class. (Ok, I admit it, the fact that today's Geology department lunch time seminar was titled "Iceland" was an additional incentive to head down the hill! Many wonderful photos in that talk!)

As I expected would happen, he not only was able to give me a *much* easier approach to my problem (forget about the predicted mineral compositions from Perplex, just subtract the garnet core composition I measured with the microprobe from the whole-rock composition measured in the lab--infinitely easier than what I was trying to do!), he also gave me many other useful things to think about, and other ideas to try to see if we can get the Perplex to actually predict the real garnet.

Of course, heading down the hill did significantly impact my working day, as it usually does. Since we were there we decided to treat ourselves to some junk food that also has some nutritional value, and is quite different from what we eat at home (fish & chips for him and some prawns for me) and ate them while doing our daily walk down there, looking at the nice older houses in the neighbourhood near Uni. Then on to the grocery store and finally home, arriving just before [livejournal.com profile] baronsnorri got home, so he and I did our walk up to the waterfall (nice to actually go for both walks during daylight hours for a change!) before I finally settled in to work, more than eight hours after leaving the house this morning! (Granted, some of those eight hours was doing uni work at Uni).

Tonight I managed 4 hours of running various attempts at modelling my garnet, none of which works any better than the first version (from months ago), but briefly describing what techniques were tried and how the results differ from one another gave me another 546 words and 5 figures/tables for the thesis, and I've got some more ideas to try tomorrow, after I'm rested...
