It amazes me how quickly time slips by, perhaps enhanced by the fact that there is so much I am meant to have accomplished on my uni work by now that hasn't been done yet. Once again I had another weekend with far, far more time devoted to SCA stuff than to Uni stuff. Friday night we loaded up a friend's car with my pavilion and other gear and then I went to sleep early (missing the birthday party of another friend, but I was much too tired to go out!). Saturday several of us were on the road by 07:15 on our way to the town of Geeveston, where they were holding their second annual Medieval Mayhem Fair. This caused us to arrive at the park so early that the public toilets weren't open yet, and I was forced to wait until after I'd set up the pavilion (which takes all of 20 minutes, so it wasn't really a problem, since it wasn't an urgent need, but only the general principal that the car had stopped, and therefore I was supposed to avail myself of the facilities).

Other tents were being set up, and the sound system was being put up. Soon all was in readiness and people started wandering through. There were at least 31 SCA folk in attendance, adding atmosphere to the event by wandering about in costume, participating in our dancing and combat demos, and overseeing our archery display, wherein members of the public were permitted to shoot for a small fee (to cover the expected cost of broken arrows). One of the other featured entertainment was the band Harlequin, and we finally found time between their sets and our demos to discuss the costumes they want my help creating. In theory, I will help them obtain more period costumes (they will do much of the sewing, I will oversee the design phase, cutting, and do the hand-finishing details whilst they use a sewing machine for the big seams) and they will make me that hammer dulcimer that I've wanted since I first saw one back in the early 1980's. So after a wonderful day at the faire I went home and converted their measurements to cutting diagrams so that I could calculate how many yards (the plan is to order linen from a US company, which is why the odd unit of measure!) of fabric will be needed. I was quite surprised at how long the process takes when doing multiple costumes at once! Normally I work with a pre-shrunk piece of fabric, and work out the most efficient layout of the rectangles and squares for one item of clothing given the shape/size of the fabric. It is sort of weird to do this for three tunics, two under gowns and two bliauts at once, assuming that they will be three different colours of fabric, with different combinations of the colours for each. Took much longer than I expected, and off I went to sleep as soon as I'd finished (and done my daily yoga).

It wasn't until mid-day today that I realized that while I *did* remember to do yoga, I not only failed to do any uni work, I also failed to read my 1000 words of geological literature. :-( So now I need to start my count over. Wah! And I'd made it to 112 days before forgetting this time!

Today we baked an apple pie from the apples we picked on the drive home. The Huon Valley has been an apple-growing area for more than a century, and there are any number of places where fruit trees grow along the side of the road, on the outside of the fences which line the road, so we took a few home to play with. It is odd how much I enjoy making apple pies, since I don't actually care for the taste of cooked fruit, and so don't eat them. Perhaps it is the lovely sweep of the domed crust making the pies look just like those pictured in my children's story-books when I was little. Other than the baking, I haven't really accomplished much today, just enjoyed a nice quiet day of recovering from yesterday's adventures. I wonder if I've always needed this much down time after SCA events and didn't notice because as an undergraduate student I had the time to spare spending a day reading, and didn't stress about the work I wasn't doing. Here's hoping that my recovery is complete and that I accomplish much tomorrow!
