Last night I had a note from a friend in Alaska who has a MySpace page, and having heard from him I wandered over to look at his photographs. One of them triggered a craving for the buttery-sweet goodness of a freshly baked cinnamon roll. However, at that time the afternoon was rapidly turning evening, and I've got this weird quirk wherein my appetite turns off in the evenings and I lose all interest in food, so I knew I wouldn't have time to do proper yeast-based rolls before it switched off.

I gave it a few seconds of thought, and decided that a quick way to yield to the craving would be to adapt a batch of scones to fit the niche, so I went off to the kitchen to have some fun. I tossed a couple of cups of flour, a tablespoon or two of butter, a couple teaspoons of baking powder, and perhaps a tablespoon of sugar into a bowl, worked it together and added a most of a cup of milk. I then rolled it out to about 6 mm thick and spread it with butter, cinnamon and sugar, rolled it up, used some string to slice the biscuits and baked them. I had just enough time while they were in the oven to wash up the mess and combine plenty of butter with powdered sugar and milk to make a frosting before they came out of the oven.

Yum!

Not the same as proper yeast-based rolls, but quite nice nonetheless. Fortunately, the boys liked them, so they all disappeared straight away. The two small ones I had were more than enough for my small appetite. It is pretty rare that I have a sweet tooth, so it is fun to indulge it when it happens.
