Night Owl. Literally!
Feb. 11th, 2008 09:01 amLast night, as I often do, I went for an evening stroll before heading to bed. Our neighbourhood has only a few street lights, so for much of the walk we are able to enjoy the stars. I wasn't motivated enough this time to take the serious loop up the dirt track and over the hill home, so just stayed on the paved street and was unexpectedly rewarded thereby.
Sitting atop one of the short (~ 1 meter tall) white posts with which the edge of the road is marked to keep cars from driving over the edge of the road and plunging down the hill was an owl! I have never seen one outside of a zoo so close before. We noticed it just as we passed it's post, and stopped to look at it for a bit. Even though we were only a few feet away, it happily sat there and posed for us for a bit, and didn't seem to be the least bit concerned about the fact that we were there, and talking about it. Alas, about then a car drove by, and as soon as the headlights reached the bird, it spread its wings and flew off into the trees. There certainly are some perks to living in a tiny neighbourhood surrounded by "bush" (as they say here in Australia) on the side of a mountain!
