That complicates the schedule
May. 1st, 2024 07:33 am In Sweden it is permissable to change to summer tires as early as 31 March. The official "you should have done so by now" date is 15 April, but the law says that winter roads can extend the season. I live far enough north that the season is nearly always extended, and it is really only this week that it has been both warm enough, and no new snow falling that we were willing to do the change.
However, it is a busy week, with lots on the schedule. Monday Keldor anf Þórólfr made the trip out to the shire storage unit to return things that had been used for the textile festival, drop off new things the shire has purchaced for our Medieval Days festival for the public this summer, pick up the banners and stuff we want to bring to Double Wars, and some things needed for the hotdog and hamburger sale the shire was doing on Tuesday at the city Valborg bonfire. After they got back, since he was in Skelleftehamn anyway, he went over to Folketshus and watched the local hockey team playing on the big screen there. They won their match, which he says is a big deal, as it was the twelfth in the series needed for some sort of special prize. This turns out to be a good thing for the shire, as apparently hocky is a big enoug deal locally that thousands of fans put on their team colours and take to the streets the next day in celebration, which meant that we sold out of everything and replunished supplies more than once during the sale on Tuesday.
Not that I was there. I had planned to join the sale, as it was fun to do last year. But this year we have only one functional car, and he already had it in town. Also, Double Wars is earlier this year, so Valborg falls right in the middle of packing for the event. I checked the bus schedule and I had a choice of arriving to the city bus terminal 1 hour, 15 minutes early, or 15 minutes late, and then I would still need to get to the event itself. Or... I could stay home and work here.
I finally decided to stay home, and this turned out to be very good in terms of getting stuff accomplished. Remember how last spring we had finally managed to get our garage clean, emptied of the previous owner's stuff, and organised, just in time for Keldor’s brother to sell his house? So that the garage was immediately filled with piles of random stuff that Keldor had been storing in that barn? In the year since we have slowly managed to go through that chaos and put some stuff away, but much was still there. Plus the addition of the outdoor table moved in for the winter which got covered with home improvement project debri, that somehow hadn't been put away after the projects were complete. Plus the snow blower sitting in the middle of the path, over the drain in the floor where it had been left after last use. All that meant that getting to the wall mounted posts on which we store the pavilion poles was an exercise in contortion.
Yesterday morning I stripped the bed after work and decided to even wash the crocheted over blanket. It was a sunny day, so I decided to let it dry on the line, and walking through the garage to get there inspired me to see what I could do about the room to make it easier to load the car on Thursday.
The first goal was to put the snow blower back into the closet in the corner, where it lives for the summer, which meant digging a path to that door. That accomplished, I discovered that we still have three big bags of planting soil that we were too busy to use last summer. So I cleared off the workbench that was buried in the last of Keldor's random stuff and set the bags there. Then emptied the table, putting things away, and moved the big motor powered log splitting thing he has (that will one day be converted to a motor driven hammer for smithing, he tells me) out of the way, so I could push the table up against the workbench. By the time I was done working, that big tool was up against the wall under the pavilion poles, the lawnmowers and stuff were tucked out of the way under the workbench, and there is enough room in the center of the garage to dance a little. Now it will be easy to access the pavilion poles, and to carry the pavilion itself, and all the other camping gear through that room.
However, I didn't get that done till well after I would have needed to go to catch the later of the two busses. Then I took a popcorn break, after which I spent the evening packing armour, crafts stuff and clothes. Keldor went to the hamburger sale, as he needed to drop off stuff. He hadn't planned to stay long, as he wanted to change the tires after, but he was having fun talking to people and started working, so he wound up staying the full time. Then he went back to work to use the workshop to change the tires.
That is when he discovered the problem. Remember when we needed to have our breaks fixed early in the winter? It turns out that they seriously over tightened the bolts on one of the tires, and now the threads are destroyed, making it impossible to put that wheel back on. If it weren't after 21:00 when he found the problem he could have fixed it. Apperently the bolt is an unusual size, so they don't have one of those things for creating new threads in just that size in his workshop. However, he knows of a nearby workshop that does, and he could borrow it. But not at that hour. Nor on a public holiday like today. And most (all?) shops that might sell us one are not open today.
So he took the company car home, and now he is sleeping in. In a while he will try a few options to see if he can find such a tool today. If not he will have to do it tomorrow after work, which will mean not starting to load the car as early as we would have liked.
In the worst case scenario we might even need to rent a van for the trip, but we don't think it will come to that. However, as I accomplished so much yesterday that means that today I can make cookies! Gluten and dairy free for my beloved friends who will be there who need that, and rich in butter, nuts, fruit, etc for me.
Edited to add: at 19:00 Keldor heard from a friend that had the right tool for the job, so he drove the 35 minutes in to town, met the friend, they fixed the new threads on the bolt, changed the tires, and he was driving home again by 21:00. Now the plan is to get some sleep, and load the car directly after work tomorrow and hit the road. I will try to sleep a bit extra during the day so I can take the first driving shift.
