interesting job ad
Feb. 26th, 2024 06:48 pmI saw an ad for a PhD Fellowship in Medieval Stone Adhesives at the University of Stavanger that sounds interesting, and totally different from anything I have done to date.
The researcher/contact person/potential supervisor is named Bettina, so I took the name as an auspicious omen*, and tried to call, and when she didn't answer sent a quick note introducing myself (and the short form of my background) expressing interest, and wondering if I am a viable candidate according to her uni's HR department, given that my master's in Archaeology didn't include coursework (remember that was the reason I didn't get the soapstone phd project I applied for at the University of Bergen). She replied fairly promptly with thanks for reaching out, saying my background is intriguing, and she's forwarded the question to HR and will happily talk over zoom once they have replied.
If they say that my background is acceptable for the requirements for the position preparing the project plan would take a bit of work, given that I have never researched Medieval tar-based glues for stone before, so I would need to so a fast literature review. But the deadline isn't till 22 April, so it would be possible. In the meantime I will continue working on my experimental archaeology PhD application for UmeƄ University. Who knows, one of these applications may lead to a fun job.
*(My sister's in-laws call her Bettina, since they can't pronounce Beth, not having a th sound in their language (the variety of Spanish spoken in Oaxaca, Mexico)
