Been busy enough that I forgot to post
Sep. 21st, 2008 11:57 pmOr is that I didn't *really* have a progress report, so I didn't post one? (If so, then shame on me, because it is the threat of posting "didn't accomplish anything" which helps motivate me to accomplish lots!)
Anyway, Friday was a day with some time devoted to getting ready for house guests, some to walks, and some to uni work, with somewhat fewer hours to uni work than there should have been. One of the houseguests, who was meant to arrive late afternoon/early evening wound up having car trouble, so opted to just stay with family instead of coming here. That was kind of disappointing, as I'd been looking forward to spending some time with her in addition to at the event, but these things happen. The others went to the pre-event gathering at the Solar, and had so much fun they didn't arrive here to sleep till after I went to sleep (which was around 01:00 Saturday morning). I'm certain that I'd have enjoyed attending that gathering, but I stayed home and got a bit more work done than if I'd have gone out.
Saturday I managed a bit more than three hours of uni work during the day (and a short walk with one of the house guests) and then went to the SCA feast sponsored by the College of St. Gildas. It was a truly delightful evening. The small hall was just about exactly the correct size for those of us in attendance--not a huge crowd, but a friendly one, with some singing, some dancing, some socializing, court (with the installation of the newest Seneschal, an energetic lord whom I expect shall do well with the job), and plenty of time for stitching (I am *so* glad that I've worked out that I can do nalbinding by candlelight--if I hadn't, I'd have had to go without a project, since none of my current sewing projects can really be done in poor lighting conditions, and I get so little time to stitch, I'm simply not interested in *not* stitching when I could be!). Really, everything I would want in an event! I also went to the after-revel, which means that I spent more than five hours at the event, which is a couple more than I did uni work. Oops, I suspect the ratio of time should really have been reversed, but I can't regret the fun time I had.
Today was a very slow starting sort of day--I managed to get up at 08:30, despite having not made it to bed before 02:00, because
baronsnorri had suggested that we take the houseguest on a morning walk before they went off to today's rapier tourney--we hadn't enough time yesterday to take her all the way to the waterfall, and really, if you are going to stay here, you *should* get to see the waterfall. So off we went, sleepy though I was. Some combination of being short of sleep, or perhaps simply having had so much play-time the day before kept me not functioning my best for much of the day--several attempts to work, interspersed by long breaks (including one short nap). Finally I went for a walk with
clovis_t and that woke me up enough to be really useful. The evening slipped by quickly as I worked out a template for calculating the area of six different zones of a garnet--inner core, middle core, outer core, inner rim, middle rim, and outer rim--complete with scale-model in garish colours in CorelDraw. Now that I've got it, I've made some good progress adding the extra fields to my spreadsheet for calculating the composition of the rock based upon the percentage of each mineral present and the measured composition of each mineral (or zone within a mineral). Alas, it is after midnight, and tomorrow we need to get up early, so I've put it down for now. In the morning I finish setting up the spreadsheet and use the results to try to calculate the pressure and temperature of this sample from the calculated whole-rock composition, to see how it compares with that calculated from the measured XRF-whole rock composition. I've done these for a few other samples, but so far only for those for which I couldn't obtain a pressure/temperature estimate for the XRF version (and still couldn't get one with the calculated version, even though it was noticeably different). It will be interesting to see what happens for this one. Will the different starting composition yield more or less the same pressure/temperature, a different pressure/temperature, or no estimate at all?
