[livejournal.com profile] madryn_1960 asked me for photos of my trip to Toulouse, so I've posted a bunch over on Facebook. Sorry I'm too tired to put them here, too...

Why am I posting photos instead of enjoying the SCA event? Because all flights to Frankfurt were canceled due to volcanic ash. Sure, we *could* have taken the train instead. But the reason we had booked flights in the first place is that they are ever so much more affordable than the train. Not being willing to pay that much for a weekend, I'm staying home, where, with luck, I will accomplish much. The airlines says that they will refund the ticket price, less a 20 Euro service charge, within the month. Here is hoping the air is clear for my flight to Vienna in a couple of weeks...

Wow! Please lead me to the places where it's cheaper to fly than take the train!

I'm sorry your trip got cancelled. The ash cloud is something else - so much of Europe is under it at this point, it's a miracle that anyone is making it anywhere!

Everywhere there are budget airlines. The "normal" prices are more expensive to fly, but I never buy those tickets. Ryan Air and EasyJet over here both regularly offer tickets where the base price is 6 Euros. Once you add the taxes and fees for baggage, web check in, paying with a credit card, etc. The price of a round trip ticket is around 40 or 50 Euros for those flights. Trains for the same distance are rarely less than 100 Euros. I choose which events to attend more on the question "can I get a cheap flight?" than I do question based on the event itself. Though a really good event might tempt me to go up to 100 Euros in travel costs.
