some posts are easy

Excerpt from an e-mail I just sent to my co-author.
In about nine hours of work on this paper today I have accomplished:
* getting all references converted to Endnote save for three which are still awaiting a reply from you as to what they are
* inserted the discussion section into the document
* converted all pressure references to the same abreaction (kbars instead of Kbar, kbar, kb, and kbars)
* converted all short dashes to the long style dashes which had been used about half of the time
* major re-structuring and ordering of the document to make it easier for the reader to understand.
During the course of working on the latter point I have done some additional editing and proof reading. However, there is still much work in the way of proof reading to be done. But these things are best done with a fresh mind, and it is nine pm, so I'm going home for the night, I will resume the editing in the morning.

I haven't done much else with my day. I did get a *short* walk this morning though. When I woke up I was greeted with one of my favorite sights: winter tree branches all white with a thin layer of snow. It wasn't cold enough for the snow to stick to the ground, but the branches and the tops of cars which hadn't moved all night had a thin coat. The snow was still falling in lovely, fluffy, flakes, so instead of simply walking across the street wearing only indoor clothing as I normally do, I actually put on my coat and hat and went for a bit of a walk, enjoying the sight of the snow and the fact that the temperatures were so nice and comfortable for a person wearing a coat and hat over their clothes to walk in.
I've been seeing more and more signs of impending spring recently, including longer hours of daylight, more plants and flowers in people's window boxes, buds on a few of the trees. While many people would say that these are all good things, to me they are primarily warnings. Warnings that Summer is Coming. And if it is anything like last summer, I'd really rather just skip it. Why? Because the heat in Milan in July and August is just plain oppressive. It isn't like Arizona, where it gets hot during the day and then at night it cools off and one gets relief. Nope, not at all. Instead it stays hot, all night long--I've seen signs announcing that it was in the mid 30's C at midnight. I'd rather not see such things in person again. But it can't be helped--my contract here runs through December, so I am going to have to survive one more summer. I can only hope that coming to it via spring will be easier than landing here after two weeks on the US west coast preceded by departing a Tasmanian Winter...
