So, It finally occurred to me to log into the UTAS web page where one's student records are kept (in my defence I pretty much never needed to log in there--only one time each year, when I needed to fill out my "Annual Report", which I didn't have to do in 2009, as they aren't required for people who have submitted their thesis, so no surprise that I didn't think to do it sooner).

Right there, on the bottom of the screen, were the beautiful words:

"16 Dec 2009: Admitted Doctor of Philosophy"

The degree didn't quite get awarded on my birthday, but I'm ok with it being on my father's birthday. Besides, only six days late means I can still claim it as a birthday present, right?

I've always liked the term "natural philosophy", meaning "science" or "how the natural world works". I'm ok with having a degree called "Doctor of Philosophy", since the "philosophy" I studied was exactly what conditions lead to the growth of the current minerals in Tasmanian metamorphic rocks. The term just fits. Even if it does sound funny and leads to teasing on the part of people who are more used to thinking of Nietzsche than Hutton when they think of "Philosophers"...

The abbreviation "PhD" stands for Doctor of Philosophy and is a hold over from a time when everything that wasn't theology, medicine, or law was lumped in the broad catagory of "philosophy" (or so the linked wikipedia article would have us believe). I've often heard the term "Natural Philosophy" used to mean "science".

It's awesome that you have completed such a task - and the visible confirmation of your success is a profound moment - a little tear production is certainly not out of line.

Well Done You. So, is a Phd. a metamorphic degree? i.e. 'formed under pressure.'

Hmm. Having done it, I think I'd more liken it to diagenesis. Some heat & pressure--enough to enact a transformation, but not full blown metamorphism
