Today the College of St. Gildas the Wise (also known as the University of Tasmania's Medieval and Renaissance Society) hosted a lunch-time boffer tournament. Since I happened to be working at uni today, and the tournament was held on the lawn right outside of the building housing my office, I brought along a costume, and wandered down for it.

It proved to be a delightful diversion. Our beloved Seneschal and Treasurer did a fabulous job of organizing the gathering and actually convincing students to attend. They provided us a selection of cheese, crackers, sausage & biscuits (what Americans call "cookies"), and caused an impressive array of boffer weapons (and shields!) to be there for our amusement.

There were five us there in our own costumes, and at least a half a dozen others there for the full time, some of whom borrowed costumes (it was advertised as "garb optional"), and a few others who stopped by briefly on the way to or from their classes. I think there were six of us competing in the tournament. I managed to kill the boys I faced, but our beloved Treasurer hacked me to bits when I faced her the first time. However, when we met again in the finals, I succeeded in defeating her, so they declared me the Champion of St. Gildas.

All and all a fun break from staring down a microscope and tracking down my advisor to discuss calculations and their implications. What a joy that the current St. Gildas officers are causing things to happen at Uni!

All hail the Champion!

In other news: I was chatting with the Bear about how some metal statues at the zoo had been made (some were lost-wax and some were welded)and the term, "they sure broke the mold when they made that one" came up. We talked about it, that is speaks about truly original folks. He said that he thought about you when thinking over this saying. He was quite gleeful about the idea of your coming to visit the states next year. Keep us in the know as plans progress!

No idea yet, but it is to be hoped that once I finish up the degree and apply for post-docs somewhere that I will manage to land one which starts a month or three after we are free to leave here, so we can buy a round-the-world ticket and visit people and interesting places on our way to wherever we go next. Exactly where we wind up visiting will depend on A) where our destination is B) how much $ we have available for travel C) how much time is available before we need to be where ever it is that we are heading.

I promise to post to my journal when it gets closer asking people for crash space while we travel, and any resultant offers, combined with all the other factors, will influence our decision...
