Back on the 24th of April, I posted about an 1885 article which seemed to be introducing the term mylonite to the geologic literature. However, the way the article was written made it unclear if what I was reading was a review of a book, a summary of a talk he did, or if that is just the way people wrote science papers back then, using the third person. So I contacted the Lapworth Museum and asked them if there was a book, or if they had any further information of Lapworth's use of the term. To which they replied saying:

"Thanks for your enquiry. Lapworth was the first to use the term, deriving the word from the Greek word for a mill - mylonos. The first published reference is indeed the 1885 paper, although we have correspondence dating back to late 1882 which show his growing understanding of the processes involved.
In terms of citable sources, the 1885 paper is the one to go with."

Since that only answered half of my question, I wrote back to ask if perhaps the 1885 article were the summary of a talk he presented at a meeting or some such, or if the third person/past tense format was simply a writing convention of the time. They replied within minutes saying:

"I don't have the paper to hand, but the 1885 paper was a meeting report so that sounds right."

*And* they attached a 2002 paper summarizing Lapworth's mylonites, including modern photographs of the thin-sections he studied when coming up with the term!!!!! Wow, what a useful museum, with nice staff!
