Got about six hours sleep yesterday, waking just after 3pm. After a quick breakfast I went in to uni, where I managed to catch my advisor before he went home and get his help setting up the fancy microscope/camera to take composite photographs of three last samples (it turns out that I'd created to different list of samples which still need photos, so the 8-sample photo shoot I did not too long back wasn't quite all of them--oops). While the camera did its thing (these composite photos are made from over 500 individual photos) I took advantage of the good internet connection and put the final draft of chapter five and the pdfs of its figures onto the departmental shared hard drive for my advisor, and downloaded a new paper which had come in from a document delivery request. I am more grateful than ever for the good internet connection the university provides when we are on campus. Our house has, once again, been slowed down on our internet connection, because, once again, we have used more than the 5 gigs the internet provider permits us to have at full speed each month. Somehow, I don't think that I will ever find that particular business practice to be reasonable, but there isn't anything I can do save leave the country and hope that Italian internet providers are more reasonable. Once I finished my tasks at uni I stopped by Dance Practice in progress. I was more than a lot late for it, arriving at 20:30 (it starts at 19:00), but the uni work is more important than showing up to a social gathering on time, and catching the last half an hour and getting a bit of exercise seemed better than missing it entirely, like I have the past few sessions. After dance and some more food I settled into my evening's uni work. In passing--the oddest thing to me about having successfully made the transition onto night shift is eating at night. It has been so long since my body has had any interest in food in the evenings that it is weird to eat when the clock says evening. But, my body says "morning/early afternoon--feed me", so I am, and, indeed, as it gets later into the night I do still lose interest in food--I couldn't eat right now if someone demanded it of me, and offered me my favourite foods.

This evening's accomplishment has been substantial improvement to the first half of chapter six, including a new figure, and 221 new words, as well as some restructuring of the text and general improvement edits. This part of the chapter is really starting to look like the summary of a PhD project (as opposed to a highschool lab report, which the earliest draft most resembled). However, while I feel good about everything I've done today, I'm disappointed that it took all day to do it, because I really need this chapter done ASAP (yesterday would have been nice). Ah well, we do what we can, and keep plugging along.
