Palt day

The weather today was much better--back below freezing again, as it should be this time of the year. When I woke up I remembered that I had left my sheepskin in the house after using it as a yoga mat last night.

Therefor I decided to just head into the house and do my morning workout there. However, much to my surprise the front door was locked and the house still dark, so I returned to the motorhome and snuggled up with [livejournal.com profile] lord_kjar for a bit before returning to the house, where people were setting out breakfast this time.

Normally I do my workout before breakfast, but with that extra delay I opted to have museli first. Today my phone wanted me to start with 150 situps. I'm clearly not totally recovered from having been sick last weekend, judging by the number of pauses that were required. Oh well, I may have needed a lot of short rest breaks, but I still managed to do the whole suggested exercise set. Then I had some leftover rice porridge for second breakfast. I had the option of mixing it with some of the cream leftover from last night's desert, but I knew we would be eating palt later, so I resisted the impulse.

Since it was nice we went for a walk after breakfast. It takes only 14 minutes to walk from the house, across the highway, and to the little dock shared by the houses in this area. Since the sun was shining directly in out eyes when we reached the coast we opted not to head out onto the ice. Instead we went back to the house and started walking along the brook between [livejournal.com profile] lord_kjar's parent's house and the neighbour's property. We had heard that there was a beaver damn up stream a bit, but were surprised when we found the first small damn still in sight of the house. That one has clearly been there a while--all of the knawed stumps were dark with age. Indeed, [livejournal.com profile] lord_kjar has been told that one of the neighbours shot (and ate) the beaver that had been in that brook.

Dinner today was a traditional palt dinner, served at 14:00, which meant that we were all really hungry, as no lunch is served when one plans to eat palt later. In addition to the eight we have had the last couple of days [livejournal.com profile] lord_kjar's little brother, his wife and son and her parents joined us, so the table was full.

Palt is Norbotten's answer to dumplings. One makes it by grating a portion of leftover cooked potatos and another of raw potatos and blending them with both wheat and barley flour when making the dough. This is cooked in boiling water, either plain or wrapped around diced pork, and served with lingon jam, butter, and milk to drink. Needless to say, it is very filling.

One always makes extra, as it freezes well. One popular way to eat leftover palt is to slice it into cubes and fry it in butter.

It has been quite a while since we have made palt at home, and I think we should--I think it would be awesome with a spinach-fresh cheese filling instead of pork. I also want to try a moose-butter filling. However, they take time to make, so who knows when we will get to it.

We have one more day in Kinnbäck. Tomorrow [livejournal.com profile] lord_kjar's sister and her husband and two daughters arrive, and we are looking forward to catching up with them before heading home and returning to work on Monday.
