We arrived at <ljuser="lord_kjar">'s parent's house about an hour before lunch (served noon sharp) today, which gave us a chance to catch up with people and help out a little with food prep. This year there were only eight of us present: his parents, he and I, one of his brothers and his wife and their eight year old daughter and 2.5 year old son.
Therefore the lunch board had only 15 to twenty things to choose from (not counting the various bread types separately), all of which is sreved cold. As a fussy eater who doesn't care for fish or ham or pickled things that left "only" salad, cheese, hardboiled egg, cold sliced roasted moose, and bread for my plate. Which made me willing to say yes when they encouraged me to take more.
Then we had some hours to relax before dinner was served at 16:00, which time included chatting (and working on my tunic in progress), music, a short walk, and a couple of hours reading.
I failed to pack my book, so am borrowing their copy of The Mamoth Hunters, which is one I have read many times in English, and we have a copy of at home. I suspect that I will finish this one in much less elapsed time than has gone by while I have been reading Eragon, which I have never read in English, and have just not been curious enough about what happens next to make time for it.
Dinner also had lots of options. I ignored the ordinary meatballs, pork ribs, fish, etc. And took the moose meat balls, potatos, salad, baked omlette with cheese, bread and roasted mixed root vegetables dish.
After dinner Tomten came to visit, with his snow white beard and bag of prezzies for the kids, followed by more music, conversation, and reading.
Then, at long last, the moment I had been waiting for: risalamalta, or as I think of it, the food of the gods. (Slow cook porridge rice in more milk than you think it can hold. Cool. Blend with whipped cream. Serve with thawed berries and/jam.)
Then the others had cookies with coffee or tea, but since I had as much risalamalta as I had had dinner I skipped the cookies.
I did play my dulcimer a bit (earlier it was <ljuser="lord_kjar"> on the Nyckelharpa providing music), and am contemplating doing yoga soon.
Tomorrow we head out into his dad's forest for adventures, since here in Sweden the real holiday with the traditional foods is the day before...
