1) How long have you been doing yoga and what inspired you to start?

I took my first yoga class when still in my teens, inspired by the fact that my first love had taken yoga classes. But I although I loved it, I never remembered to practice outside of class. Took the occasional class, once every few years, on the topic, but didn’t start doing it very regularly till the winter I lived in Kotzebue (north of the Arctic Circle, on the coast of Alaska). There I met a lady who had a large collection of yoga videos and a huge TV and a larger living room, so we’d meet daily and do one of the videos. I loved it, but, alas, when I moved away, I once again forgot to make time for it in my life.

Then, almost five years ago, [livejournal.com profile] clovis_t and I were given the choice by the Australian government to either make our relationship a legal bond or not get a visa for me to follow him home to Australia. We weren’t in any way ready to face a separation, even if it had only been temporary (there was a chance that if we applied again for the “defacto spouse visa” several months later, when a full year had elapsed since first we opened a joint bank account that they’d have approved it, but we weren’t willing to take the risk). So we did a spur of the moment legal ceremony and let the visa application change from “defacto” to “spouse”. Since we were making a financial commitment to one another, we decided to throw in a commitment to take care of our bodies as well as our budget, and started doing yoga together on a daily basis. We started with only 15 minutes a day, and after a year we jumped to 20 minutes a day, and have added one minute a day since then. On Friday we will add another minute, making it at least 24 minutes a day. I still haven’t missed a day, but he missed lots of them earlier this year after he and I opted to go our separate ways. Now that he’s staying with me again, he generally joins me for yoga, though. (ok, that was probably a much longer answer than you were expecting.)

2) Would you be interested in having me come visit if I get out to Italy this year? I have close friends living in Florence this school year and really want to get out there

Yes, Please! I’d love to meet you in person, and I enjoy visitors, too. What sorts of things do you want to do/see in the Milan area? The Alps? The cathedral/museums? Other stuff?

3) As a fairly nomadic person, do you collect anything tangible and if so, what significance does it have for you?

Books! I’m an addicted re-reader (though that pastime took a serious decrease in hours while finishing up the PhD), and my old favourites give me joy just to see the covers on the shelf. I’ve still got some of my childhood stuffed animals, though I would up letting some of them go. I had been collecting some nice fabric in hopes of sewing with it, but unless the shippers find that suitcase I may have to start that over again. I guess the kitchen toys count, too. I love to bake. I’ve been hanging on to the large cookie sheets, even though they were too big for the oven in Tassie, and way, way too big for the toaster oven I’ve got here. I will have a real oven again, someday (probably the next place I live).

4) Do you have a specific persona in the SCA, and if so, what is it? Having met you via the SCA livejournal illuminati I feel like I’m missing certain bits of info. ;-)

I never have developed a persona. I like the generally early periods (I claim to enjoy fashion from the Neolithic to the 12th Century), but I’ve never been able to select one time/place to call my own. This is probably no surprise since I haven’t selected a single location to settle down in in the modern world, either, and as a non-monogomist, I never could find a single person for whom I’d be interested in giving up my other loves. But it does make it harder to focus one’s research!

5) If you were going to start a new hobby/activity and were unlimited by funds/time/location/etc what would it be?

I’ve always though paragliding sounded fun. Hike up a mountain, and jump off! But I’ve never had the budget to even think about trying it. There are a variety of other outdoor activities that I think I’d enjoy, but haven’t found the cash/made the time for them, such as kayaking, more serious mountaineering than the day hikes I so love. Perhaps llama supported trekking—all the comforts of home while hiking/camping, but no need to carry the pack oneself.
