Somehow I don't think that I'd be a good fit in the consultancy world--I think that consultants need to have interest in topics that are potentially profitable (how to find the gold/oil/whatever) or need to know about environmental issues (how does that spill effect the ground water way over there? Is that slope stable/safe enough to build upon?) And I'm much more interested in questions like "how did those mountains form?, What does the composition of these minerals tell us about the temperatures at which they grew? What does that tell us about how deep they were at the time?"
Also, my approach to life has always been based upon being a student, I'm *comfortable* in an academic environment, I'm not certain I would be in the business world. I'm willing to accept the lower levels of pay that comes with academia in exchange for the joys of being able to determine for myself what I am going to study!
