I applied for a library research assistant job at LTU today. They require "at least" a bachelors in library science. I have no idea if a doctorate in geology counts as "at least" in that sentence, but it was worth trying, I suppose.

When I got home from work at 13:00 ish, the blowing wind and started to deposit snow in the walkway. When I went back out just after 20:00 to shovel, it was completely blocked, but before I cleared it all again I remembered to take a photo for your amusement. Then I cleared the driveway, too, since it also had 15 to 30 drifts blocking much of it (though other bits were scoured clear).

Just as I finished the shovelling E's boyfriend arrived to take her to the emergency room, and they came up the first driveway, not knowing that I had cleared the second. They got most of the way up, and stopped in a drift (I am not clear if they stopped there on purpose, or if that was as far as the car would make it.

They went into the house to get her, and I started clearing the snow from directly in front of their car, so that they could just go forward and take the clear driveway out. After they fetched Elnaz the boys took the shovels (one from me and the other from where it hangs on the carport wall) and cleared the rest of the path they needed to get out. I told them David was coming on Sunday to drive the tractor and clear all the snow, so we needed only put it out of the way, but not completely out of the driveway, and they took me at my word, so now there are deep piles in the way.

I will try to keep the second driveway clear for getting to and from work, but I think I will ignore the rest till Sunday and David's help with the tractor.

So, emergency room might need a bit of explanation.

On Tuesday E. sent me a message letting me know that she was feeling dizzy and nauseous and having rectal bleeding. The day before it was just spotting, but had become rather substantial. So I told her I would be right there.

I did stop to ask my colleagues where I should take her, and they suggested Stadsvikens Hälsocentral. Got there with her, and the door was locked, with a note on the door saying that one needs an appointment and if you wait in the building lobby someone will come for you. But no information as to what people looking for unplanned urgent care should do.

Just then two employees came through the door, so I asked them. They asked what the problem was, and when I said "rectal bleeding" they promptly went back in and talked to the desk. Only a minute or three later a nurse came out for us, and helped Elnaz to a small exam room, where she took her blood pressure (a little low) etc.

Just about the time I should think about heading to my physical therapist appointment Elnaz's boyfriend arrived, and tells me that if they send her to the big hospital he will take her there. I didn't think she needed both of us just then, so I went to my physical therapist appointment, where he took my back from not able to bend certain directions to a full range of motion.

By the time I got home from that she sent me a message saying that the blood test shows that her body is working to stop the bleeding, so they let her go home (to her boyfriend's house, which was closer), but the next morning she needs to return so they can check the rectum with a camera to see if the problem is there, or it it is (as they expect), deeper in the intestines. That check up confirmed that there isn't a visible problem in the rectum, so they contacted the hospital to ask for a booking for a colonoscopy, and told her she should get a letter with the time and date for that soon, but, if the bleeding starts up again, she is to go to the emergency room.

She stayed at her boyfriend's place till today, and cooked herself a nice dinner and was mostly feeling good. But then she spotted a just bit more rectal blood, and started worrying. Apparently her aunt died of colon cancer when she was little, so she is, understandably scared.

I told her I could take her to the ER tonight, but she said, no, tomorrow morning would be fine. Just as I got the job application sent off she noticed that the bleeding had increased. So I again told her I could take her in tonight, and she said "no, it wouldn't make a difference if we go tonight or tomorrow", so I said "ok, I will go shovel, so that we can get out at all, and then we can talk". Apparently, when she told her boyfriend about it, he didn't listen to her* when she said that "tomorrow would be fine" and they came and took her to the ER tonight. I am just as glad that they did the driving--apparently they nearly got stuck in the snow on the way to the hospital, but both her boyfriend and his brother were in the car, so if they had, there was someone to push. If I had taken her and we got stuck she would have been the only one available to push (since she doesn't drive), and she isn't near big enough to do that to any effect, even if her health was good.

* I probably would also have said "let's go tonight", once the driveway was clear enough to get out, but I didn't get the chance, so we will never know.
