kareina: (BSE garnet)
Since my current work contract ends with the end of the year I am now needing to wrap everything up, with a goal of having a paper ready to submit for publication *and* a full report for my colleagues at the mine (and prepare a presentation for the folk at the mine for early December, and another for a conference for early January).

To accomplish all of this I think I am going to have to be working considerably longer than eight hours a day for the rest of this month and much of December, too. Today I managed 13 hours, 20 minutes of uni work. If I can keep this up for a while I should be fine to get it all together on time. Note: I am so working at home as much as possible while I finish things up—no way would I be able to do this many hours sitting at the desk in my office, but at home, sitting on my recliner, with a kitchen full of food when I want it, I can manage.

The light at the end of the tunnel? After the first of the year it is looking likely that I will switch to part-time work—we didn’t get the funding to expand my current project (which is part of why I am trying to wrap it all up now), but there is a Master’s student who will be starting his thesis work in January, and his project is exactly in the sub-area of geology that I most prefer (yes, garnets and metamorphism are involved!), so, assuming that the Uni admin people give the final approval, I will get to supervise his project on a (probably) 25% time basis. This will free up enough time to make progress on non-uni projects, and (I hope) go back and finish that paper from my Italian research that I have never gotten to.
