A pleasant surprise
Nov. 2nd, 2012 10:12 amI have made no attempt to go for a run in days. The snow we had, followed by rain meant for very icy sidewalks and running paths for a number of days. (The worst day was Tuesday, when it was so slick out we drove to choir because it was too dangerous to walk.)
This morning my phone told me that the outside temperature was +5 C. Remembering that the paths hadn't had much ice left on them yesterday afternoon I stuck my nose outside to look. No ice in sight; time for a run!
When I run my phone (Runkeeper app) announces every five minutes how long I have been running, how far I have come, and what my average pace is. Typically the first announcement says my pace is just over seven and a half minutes per kilometer, and that number usually increases with each announcement so that at the end of the 17 to 28 minutes I normally am out for the final average pace is around seven and three-quarters minutes per kilometer.
Therefore you can imagine my surprise when at the five minutes mark my phone announced that my average pace was only six minutes 59 seconds per kilometer. Somehow I couldn't resist trying to keep it under seven minutes. It did creep up to seven minutes six seconds during the part where the path goes over a small hill, but by the time I got home 25.5 minutes after I had started my average pace had dropped back down to six minutes 56 seconds per kilometer.
That was a nice way to start the day. Now we are on the wad to Savcon, a gaming convention in a town several hours to the south. It was much fun last year, and I am looking forward to it this time.
