Yesterday my advisor returned from being out of town most of last week and had a look at my abstract--suggested a few minor edits/improvements which condensed some earlier sentences enough to make room for one more new sentence which really improves the whole thing. Then he said that it was now good enough to turn into the uni with the paperwork saying that the thesis is on the way, please arrange the examiners. So I printed out that information, and left it in his in-box, since by then he'd gone for the day, and he is acting head of school this week. A few hours later I received an e-mail from the University stating that according to their records my thesis is due on the 12th, and if I'm not going to meet that deadline I need to apply to extend my candidature. I promptly replied letting her know that I had just turned in the "thesis on the way" forms, and had planned to submit on the 16th, since I leave the country on the 17th, and was that good enough. She replied that it might be, but if they don't have it by then I run the risk of suspension. Needless to say, I promptly filled out the form to extend my candidature, and e-mailed my advisor to let him know that I'd be brining it in the next day for his signature. Sure, I might be fine with the deadlines, but it isn't a gamble I'm prepared to make--that whole risk/benefit ratio calculation stuff.
Since then I've been working steadily away and have, finally, at long last, finished Chapter 2. It has been reduced to only 16,000 words (including references) and 72 figures, but I am fairly happy with how it stands. I've sent it off to my advisor, and let him know what is still remaining to be done (finish the revisions to chapters 1, 3, & 4 that he suggested last time he saw those chapters), and asked him if he's happy with chapters 5 & 6, which I think are pretty much done. I've got the rest of today, & tomorrow and Friday early to accomplish all of that, and the weekend to print & pack. Breaks are scheduled for my dancing farewell party Friday evening, and
clovis_t's farewell party here at the house on Monday. I fly out next Wednesday morning, done or not, so I sure had better be done!
