Thank you to the most wonderful ktmcg, who said yesterday that she'd edit chapter five for me, and who has already returned it with many, many helpful suggestions (many of which I can't believe managed to get past me unnoticed).

I need to get some sleep before I incorporate her edits into the document, but the thesis will be much better as a result of her assistance than it would otherwise have been, and I am very appreciative.
