she beat me to it!

The totally wonderful [livejournal.com profile] laurelyn22 recently sent me a surprise gift of a new book by [livejournal.com profile] tammypierce, Melting Stones. I've been trying to limit how much time I spend reading it, on the grounds that I do need to be working on my thesis, but the geology has been spot-on, and it is a joy to read a book that includes so much technical details on a topic near and dear to my heart. I've been intending to post to my other blog about this book. However, someone's already beaten me to it, with her take on the book. I suppose I can't really complain though, as a volcanologist, she's got a better claim on telling the world about this particular story than do I as a metamorphic petrologist.

Ooh, I can't wait! I really enjoyed reading Terrier this summer.

I enjoyed Terrier too. This one was a true surprise, I didn't know the book existed till it arrived on my door step. An author I like, *and* well-researched geology? I win!

When Tamora Pierce relesed Melting Stones first via book on cd I bought it, loaded it on to my ipod, and listened to as much of it as I could. The story didn't seem to sink in with me. I "hear" things differently whether I read them or listen to them. When the book was available I bought it. I kept trying to read it, but kept putting it down to do homework. I found that, everytime I picked up the physical story I heard you Kareina as the lead character. It was then I knew I had to get the book to you.

Thank you so much for the good snaps and the heads-up to Magma Cum Laude's review! I was so thrilled (as you can tell from my post there)! And at least MELTING STONES didn't take you away from your thesis work for very long!

You might like this: when Grace, who was Evvy for the audio STREET MAGIC and MELTING STONES, neared the end of the recording, I went through my stone collection and pulled as many of the stones that were mentioned in MELTING STONES. I labeled them and put them in a gift box for her. She was really happy to get them, especially chrysoprase, which I had changed in the text so she wouldn't have to read it!

That must have been so cool for her--both to have the fun of such a job in the first place, and then to get that sort of memento to keep. I hope she grows up to be a geologist!
