cool water-saving device

While out getting my photo done done today, I stopped to make use of facilities at her house before heading home, and was delighted at the system they've got for hand-washing. The sink is on top of the toilet tank, so that when you flush the toilet water starts running into the sink, with which you can wash your hands, and that water then fills the tank ready for the next flush. A truly brilliant idea. I bet that it will encourage folk to actually wash their hands, because the water runs till the tank is re-filled, so if it is there, you may as well use it! And you don't need to touch the knob to turn it off afterwards, which is good since you turned it on with your un-washed hands. It is also set up in typical Australian fashion with a choice between "half-flush" and "full flush" depending upon what needs to be flushed this time.

the "half or full flush" thing was one of my fav things I discovered in my brief time in NZ. They've got good ideas down under that we could use HERE...

I love it! I've actually seen this very object talked about on some to the design blogs that I love to "waste my free time" reading. Sadly, the cost of transport to this continent makes the these fixtures prohibitively too expensive for the likes of me.

I have seen some DIY versions of the same idea, but not so elegant and sanitary. (you can rig something up using tubing and a bowl, and replacing the flat tank top on most toilets, and tehy actally sell a plastic gizmo that does this also...)What I like the most about this is the fact that the design is integral to the fixture, and also the half or full flush. Nice to know that it works in real time, I sometimes wonder about the things that I see online....

Ohmighod, that is exactly what I need for my planned additional half-bath under the stairs. There isn't a lot of room, and I've been trying to figure out where you could put the sink. I'd actually come up with an idea like this, but without the water-saving aspect. It's perfect. Now if only I can find one stateside when I get to the point of actually doing the addition. (The projected date is rather vague and depends on the availability of funds.)

Well, if you've got time before starting the project, it should be possible to find something comparable over there, even if you have to convince a local contractor to create his own version & start marketing it...
