Ok, so I also really liked the part of graduate school in Australia wherein there was no course work (and so no exams there), no qualifying exam, and no thesis defense. I strongly recommend the Australian system for anyone who is tired of being tested, but would enjoy embarking on a serious research program that results in a PhD being granted at the end of it all.
